CHICO, CALIF. – On Thursday, May 2nd, the Sonoma State baseball team kicked off their regular season series finale with Chico State. Due to expected weather later in the weekend, Thursday became a doubleheader with a pair of 9-inning games and the Seawolves dead even with Cal State LA for the 6th spot in the conference tournament.
SSU came up clutch with two wins over the Wildcats on Thursday, erupting for 25 runs on the day and holding Chico State to just 3 runs in game two.
Kenny Decelle got the party started with a 2-run shot in the first inning for his 4th of the year. Then
Niko Tejada and
Nik Kamages locked things down in relief in game two to secure the 10-3 victory and put the Seawolves in a great position above Cal State LA after the Golden Eagles lost their series opener to Stanislaus State.
GAME ONE SSU 15-10 CHICO STATE
After a leadoff single from
Sean Pauly,
Kenny Decelle would jump on the first pitch he saw and crank a breaking ball over the left field fence to stun the Wildcats and give the Seawolves an early 2-0 lead.
The scoring would only continue for SSU as they batted around in the first and Pauly would deliver a 2-RBI single to complete the 6-run inning. The Wildcats would put up five runs of their own in the third but once again Sonoma State would explode for five more in the fourth which featured another booming 2-run shot from shortstop
Daniel Monti, his 7th of the season.
Pauly would cap things off with another 2-RBI single in the 7th to give him his 5th hit and 4th RBI of the game, his first 5-hit game of his career.
Kenny Decelle,
Christopher Wright,
Daniel Monti and
Cooper Callison all finished with three hits each to add to the team's season high 23 hits.
Senior right hander
Blake Janowicz would give up 7 runs but power through five innings to earn his 3rd win of the season. Junior transfer
Marcellus Henry would make his 15th appearance of the season and give up just three runs in four innings of work to pick up his 3rd save of the season.
GAME TWO SSU 10-3 CHICO STATE
Game two featured consistent scoring from the Seawolves offense and another quality start from junior
Ethan Glassman. The lefty went four innings giving up just one run off four hits. Despite not putting himself in line for the win, he put the Seawolves in great position to close out the game as he departed with a 3-1 lead.
Monti and Wright had RBI doubles to push the lead to two and then SSU had a crucial 4-run 7th inning which featured RBI hits from the Callison brothers and catcher
Chris Ortiz. Seniors
Niko Tejada and
Nik Kamages would piece together the next four innings and get some nice insurance with three more runs in the final two innings. Tejada got credit for his first win of the season and Kamages recorded his team leading 6th save as he had five strikeouts, not allowing a single hit in his 2.1 innings of work.
Sonoma State took two games on Cal State LA as they lost their opener to Stanislaus State. The Seawolves will have a chance to secure their postseason spot on Friday with two more games against the Wildcats.
