The Sonoma State women's soccer team earned a hard-fought draw with No. 20 Western Washington on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves held a 7-4 shot advantage in the defensive battle with
Julia Betti scoring her first goal of the season on an incredible strike.
The game started slow with each team attempting just one shot in the first 15 minutes of play. In the 17
th minute, Betti took a free kick from the other side of midfield. She lofted the ball into the box where it bounced over the goalie's head and into the back of the net. The Seawolves lead lasted until the 39
th minute when an own goal by Sonoma State evened the score at 1-1.
The second half saw increased intensity from both sides, with Sonoma State out shooting their opponents 4-2. The Seawolves'
Emily Morandi tested Western Washington's goalkeeper Abigail Trengove early in the second half, but made the crucial save. Despite the increased pressure and several substitutions, neither team could find a winning goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. It was the second straight draw between the two teams who tied 0-0 last year in Bellingham.
Sonoma State's goalkeeper
Ariana Beddoes made three saves throughout the match, matching her counterpart Trengove's performance. The draw brings Sonoma State's record to 0-2-1 for the season, while Western Washington remains undefeated at 1-0-2.
The Seawolves are back in action on Monday when they head to Southern California to take on Biola in a non-conference tilt. SSU returns home later in the week to face Dominican on Thursday and Westmont on Sunday.
