Seawolves Fall Short in Season Opener Against Seattle Pacific

ARCATA, Calif. - The Sonoma State University women's soccer team suffered a 5-2 defeat against Seattle Pacific in their 2024 season opener.  The match showcased both teams' offensive prowess but ultimately the Seawolves were unable to overcome an early deficit and mount a successful comeback.
 
The game started with intense action as Seattle Pacific struck first, with Taylor Krueger finding the back of the net in the 7th minute. Sonoma State responded quickly, equalizing just two minutes later on an outstanding goal from Renee KetnerMia Solorio-Smith put a perfect thru ball into the box where Ketner laid out, beating the charging goalkeeper to the ball and finishing in the back of the net.  SPU regained the lead in the 27th minute when Moira MacKay scored with an assist from Krueger. They extended their advantage to 3-1 before halftime with a goal from Kayla Wallace in the 41st minute.
 
Sonoma State came out strong in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities. Luna Chavez and Kamryn Shigemoto both tested Seattle Pacific's goalkeeper Mercedes Cullen with shots on target. Despite the Seawolves' efforts, Seattle Pacific added to their lead in the 55th minute when Maya Parman found the net, assisted by Ashlyn Valdovinos.
 
The Seawolves continued to fight, cutting the deficit to two in the 76th minute.  Hailey Freeman converted a penalty kick, bringing the score to 4-2.  SPU sealed the victory with a penalty kick of their own, scored by Lauren Snedeker in the 86th minute.
 
Ketner and Freeman recorded the first two goals of the season for the Seawolves with Solorio-Smith picking up the lone assist. Ariana Beddoes made four saves in net while SSU recorded 15 shots, eight of which were on target. 
 
Sonoma State returns to the pitch on Saturday when they take on Azusa Pacific in Arcata.  The match is scheduled to kick-off at 2:00 pm and is available on FloSports.
