Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Draws a Tie Against Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, WASH.- For the second time in three days Sonoma State Men's Soccer took the pitch while traversing the Pacific Northwest. This time, the Seawolves faced off against the Vikings of Western Washington on their home field. After 90 minutes of tightly contested play, the match would end in a 1-1 tie thanks to a clutch, late goal in the games final minutes.

For most of the match the two opposing teams played each other extremely close. The Seawolves would take a slight edge on total shots with 14 attempts to the Vikings 11. Both teams would get six shots on goal as well. Goalkeeper Jack Chapman would post another four saves on the day while his counterpart finished with five.

It was another balanced attack with eight different players getting at least one shot off. Alejandro Zarate, Oliver Gonzalez, Jvon Cunningham, Michael Gray and Oswaldo Rojas would also all contribute at least one shot on goal as well.

Despite the multifaceted offensive approach, the hero of the day would be junior midfielder Jose Rios Lara. The Vikings would strike first at the 44 minute mark thanks to a goal by Lucas Hakamada thanks to a free kick that saw Hakamada score thanks to double assists from the pair of Joar Tidblom and Reiley Buri-Brown. The Seawolves would spend the next 38 minutes looking to even the score. That's where Rios Lara would come up huge for his teammates. With roughly eight minutes left in the match the Seaside native drew a foul on the right side of the box to earn a penalty kick. With the game on the line and in desperate need of a goal, he would convert the penalty thanks to a well placed kick into the lower right corner of the net.

Coach Marcus Ziemer's team will return home after a few days up north. The team will look to build off of this tie as Sonoma State returns to the pitch on Thursday when they take on St. Martins for the year's home opener. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 4:00 pm.
