ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Junior
Charlie Johnson turned in a dominating performance in the circle on Tuesday afternoon, hurling a no-hitter against Dominican in the opening game of the doubleheader. The Seawolves took the first game 8-0 before finishing off the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. SSU improved to 10-5 overall heading into the start of CCAA play this weekend.
Johnson was in control from the start, holding the Penguins hitless. She walked two and struck out four in her six innings of work. The Seawolves offense was ignited in the bottom of the first when
Sophia Newcomb singled, stole second, and scored on a
Taylor Rapp single, putting Sonoma State ahead 1-0.
In the second inning,
Olivia Gabriel doubled and scored on a Newcomb single to extend the lead to 2-0. The Seawolves then erupted for three runs in the third.
Amari Houston doubled and scored on another Rapp single.
Daniela Luden, pinch-running for Rapp, stole home, and
Kaiya Dickens singled to score
Lauren Mirtoni, making it 5-0.
The Seawolves continued to add to their lead in the fourth when Houston singled to second base, driving in Gabriel to make it 6-0. In the sixth, Gabriel singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout. Houston then reached on an error, scoring Gabriel.
Jasmine Moreno followed with a single to center field, driving in Houston and sealing the 8-0 victory.
Houston had a standout performance, going 2-4 with 2 RBIs, a double, and two stolen bases. Newcomb was 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Rapp went 2-2 with 2 RBIs. Gabriel also contributed significantly, going 2-2 with a double and two stolen bases.
Johnson improved to 5-3 on the season and recorded the first SSU no-hitter since Jesse Dupuis in 2022.
Dominican drew first blood in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the 2
nd off Sonoma State starter
Alexis Camberos. The Seawolves answered back in a big way in the bottom of the third, Gabriel ignited the Seawolves' offense with a single and a steal of second.
Jasmine Moreno then delivered a clutch single to center, bringing Gabriel home and tying the game. The momentum continued to build as
Iris Bejarano ripped a 2-RBI single down the left field line, scoring both Moreno and Rapp.
Kaiya Dickens capped off the inning with an RBI single of her own, extending the Seawolves' lead to 4-1.
The Seawolves continued to apply pressure in the bottom of the fourth. Gabriel tripled to right field and was driven home by an RBI single from Houston. With Houston stealing second and then advancing to third, she capitalized on a wild pitch, scoring and further increasing Sonoma State's advantage to 6-1.
Dominican closed the gap in the bottom of the 6
th with a 2-run double to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Emily Hinchey came in to close the game, shutting down the Penguins in the 7th to pick up her first career save. Camberos improved to 3-0 with five innings of work. Gabriel led the Seawolves' offense with a single, a triple, and two stolen bases. Houston contributed with a double, a single, an RBI, and a stolen base and Moreno had two singles and an RBI.
Sonoma State opens CCAA play this Friday with a trip to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay.
