Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Seawolves Wrap Up Regular Season with a Win Thanks to Stellar Defense

ARCATA, CALIF.- Sonoma State Women's Basketball ended the 2024-2025 regular season on a high note with a road victory over the Lumberjacks of Cal Poly Humboldt. The Seawolves defense was excellent after a slow start and shutdown Humboldt's offensive rhythm across the final three quarters of play. On top of a great defensive effort, two players posted big games off the bench to help put the Lumberjacks away for good.

The first quarter was a good one for the Lumberjacks who came out firing to the tune of 56% shooting from the floor and 60% shooting from three. The Seawolves rallied and over the next 30 minutes stifled the Lumberjacks offense. In the second quarter Sonoma held Humboldt to just 20% from the floor. Coming out of the half they limited Humblodt to just 33% and 25% shooting marks in the third and fourth quarter respectively. The Seawolves also forced 20 turnovers leading to 22 points. Alysa Lopez and Sheriene Arikat combined for seven steals as they dominated passing lanes while freshman defensive standout Genesis Hopkins blocked three shots. Hopkins has now blocked two or more shots in four separate games and has bumped her season total up to 18 rejections.

With both teams' offenses struggling, Sonoma got a huge lift from the pair of Sydney Peterson and Sienna Cherwinski. Peterson's late season breakout is in full swing. The freshman guard poured in a career high 12 points on a near perfect 4-5 shooting while also pulling in a pair of rebounds. Despite this being her first season of collegiate basketball, Peterson is scoring with great efficiency thanks to a 52% shooting average.

Fellow guard Sienna Cherwinski added 11 points as well while also dishing out two assists. The pair's 23 point contributions were critical in snuffing out any chance of a Lumberjacks comeback. The Seawolves now turn their eyes towards the CCAA Conference Tournament and postseason play. Having won four of their last five games, coach Abetya's squad is finding a great groove right in time for the madness that is college basketball in March!
