Seawolves Split Day One of CCAA Series Against Cougars of San Marcos

SANTA ROSA, CALIF.- Despite rain in the forecast and clouds overhead, Sonoma State Softball faced off against the visiting Cougars of Cal State San Marcos in a conference clash at Marv Mayes Field on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College. After a dominant showing in game one, Sonoma's late rally would fall just short in game two giving the Seawolves a day one series split!

Game One: SSU 10, CSUSM 0 (5 Innings)

The first game of the day was nothing short of complete domination from the Seawolves both on defense and at the plate. Once again leading the way inside the circle was two time CCAA Pitcher of the Week, Charlie Johnson. Johnson posted five innings of work holding the Coyotes to just three hits and zero runs. For good measure, Johnson struck out three batters while not allowing a single walk.

At the plate, the team would score in every single inning of action before the "run rule" came into effect in the bottom of the fifth. The Seawolves jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to an Amari Houston double that drove in Sophia Newcomb. Houston was then able to score with Jasmine Moreno launching a single down the left field line. The team would push the lead to five through the second and third frames of play before finally sealing the win with a five run fourth inning. Between a Lauren Mirtoni triple, a Carissa Marquez single, an Amari Houston single and some timely baserunning, the Seawolves finished the day with a 10-0 victory.

Amari Houston was as hot as one can be at the plate finishing the game with three hits, three RBIs and a stolen base. Leadoff hitter and starting center fielder Sophia Newcomb constantly got her team in scoring position with two hits while the duo of Jasmine Moreno and Iris Bejarano combined for five hits and two RBIs. For good measure Carissa Marquez collected two hits while Lauren Mirtoni tripled, drove in a pair of runs and also got on base via a walk.

It was a complete game from coach Jennifer Bridges' squad as they controlled every facet of the game.

Game Two: SSU 3, CSUSM 4

The second game of the day was a much closer affair that saw the Coyotes escape with a one point victory despite a late Sonoma State rally.

San Marcos would strike first, scoring the first four runs including a three run fourth inning. The Seawolves pitching duo of Nichole Sarra and Alexis Camberos put together strong showings in the circle with the pair only allowing one earned run and striking out six batters. Unfortunately, four fielding errors were key in the Coyotes being able to put points on the scoreboard.

Still, the Seawolves would dig deep late to climb back into the game. Iris Bejarano and Lauren Mirtoni kept the momentum rolling from the first game with each player recording an RBI. Jasmine Moreno also added another double to her resume while Sophia Newcomb's single was accompanied by a stolen base. The fifth inning rally saw Sonoma tack on two more runs to pull within one but unfortunately they would leave a pair of runners on base and would not be able to get back within scoring position.

Despite the close loss in game two, Sonoma finished the first day of the series with 13 runs scored, only conceded 4 scores and totalled 20 hits. A strong and promising start for the team as they gear up for the second day of their CCAA showdown against Cal State San Marcos!
