ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- After earning a split the day before, Sonoma State Softball faced off against the visiting Wolves of Western Oregon. Thanks to a late rally in the first game and a dominant offensive showing in the second, the Seawolves secured two more wins to bolster their resume.
Game 1: SSU 5, WOU 3
In the first game of the day the visiting Wolves struck first thanks to two early runs in the second inning and shutting out the Seawolves through the first four innings of play. Yet, the offensive would come alive in the fifth inning and Nichole Sarra did an outstanding job late in the game to secure the win.
The offensive was led by the pair of Kaiya Dickens and Carissa Marquez whose clutch hitting would account for four of the teams five runs. Dickens' single in the bottom of the fifth would drive in a pair of runs to get Sonoma on the board. The Seawolves starting second baseman finished the day with a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run. Meanwhile, Marquez would come into the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and make the most of her time at the plate. Marquez launched a double to left center driving in both Charlie Johnson and Lauren Mirtoni and giving herself two RBIs on the day.
Inside the circle, Nichole Sarra would toss 2.1 innings and only allowed two hits while striking out a pair of batters and forcing four flyouts to keep the Wolves from rallying late.
Game 2: SSU 9, WOU 1
The second game of the day was a dominant showing from the Seawolves that would secure their second win in just five innings of action. Freshman Alexis Camberos earned the start and across 3.1 innings only allowed one earned run and four hits. Star pitcher Charlie Johnson would come in to close out the game and in 1.2 innings dominated the Wolves. Johnson allowed one single hit, struck out two batters and forced three ground outs. Just another day at the office for Johnson who is putting together an outstanding season.
Offensively the Wolves scored a single run in the first and from that point on Sonoma dominated at the plate. For the game the team collected nine runs, eight hits, drew six walks and stole four bases. Freshman star Sophia Newcomb was a force thanks to two RBIs, a triple and two stolen bases. The duo of Lauren Mirtoni and Sam Delgado were also effective as the pair combined for four hits as well. Lastly, Taylor Rapp and Amari Houston were fantastic in terms of discipline as they each drew two walks. Houston was lethal once she was on base as well stealing a pair of bases.
