SAN MARCOS, CALIF. – Sonoma State Women's Basketball faced off against one of the top teams in the nation in a CCAA Tournament Semifinal showdown. The team put together one of their best defensive efforts of the entire year shutting down a normally prolific and highly ranked offense. Unfortunately, despite battling for 40 straight minutes, the Seawolves came up just short in their quest for a CCAA Championship.
All year long Sonoma has been able to slow down even the most explosive offenses. Once again the team shutdown the Toros by limiting them to just 28% shooting from the floor, 23% from three and forcing 19 turnovers. Turning defense to offense had the Seawolves score 13 points off of turnovers.
Jayme Blackard and Jennifer Moreno led the way by combining for 21 points and nine rebounds. Alysa Lopez had another statsheet stuffing performance with five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Normally a lethal scoring option, Lopez has stepped up her rebounding and passing ability during the team's postseason run. Off the bench Eryn Gardner brought her patented defensive and rebounding energy. On the glass she pulled down a team high seven rebounds and more impressively she blocked a game, season and career high four shots. Gardner has spent all year serving as a dynamic catalyst for the Seawolves defense and made her presence felt against one of the top teams in the nation.
The Seawolves 2024-2025 season has come to an end but this team has plenty to be proud of. They booked a ticket to the conference tournament, picked up the programs first postseason victory in years and pushed a national championship contender to the brink. Behind a pair of all-conference guards, a deep rotation and a scrappy defense Sonoma State Women's Basketball has made every single fan, alumni and fellow Seawolf proud!
