Paquin Hurls No-Hitter, Johnson Adds Shutout as Seawolves Sweep Cal State Monterey Bay

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Freshman Ava Paquin turned in a performance for the record books on Friday, spinning her first career no-hitter in the second game of Sonoma State softball's doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay.  Paquin's performance followed an 8-0, 5-inning win in the series opener behind a complete game shutout by Charlie Johnson.  The Seawolves moved to 30-19 overall and 17-13 in CCAA play with the wins.

The opener was all SSU from the start, as the Seawolves pounced early and capitalized on three Monterey Bay errors to cruise to an 8-0 mercy-rule win in five innings.

Sophia Newcomb was electric at the top of the order, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base, and a run scored. Jasmine Moreno drove in two with a first-inning double and reached base in all three plate appearances. Amari Houston and Lauren Mirtoni added two hits apiece and each scored twice.

The real damage came in the third inning, when the Seawolves turned two errors into a three-run rally. A miscue at third base allowed three unearned runs to score, extending Sonoma State's lead to 5-0.

In the fourth, Newcomb tripled and scored on Houston's RBI single before Kaiya Dickens capped the scoring with a two-run single to right.

Charlie Johnson (18-11) was in control from the circle, tossing a five-inning shutout while allowing just four hits and striking out one.

Game two belonged to Paquin, who turned in a dazzling no-hit performance in SSU's 3-0 win. Paquin faced just one batter over the minimum, striking out four and walking one in a 76-pitch masterpiece for her sixth win of the season.  She surrendered just a first inning walk before retiring the final 20 batters she faced.  The no-hitter was the Seawolves second of the season with Johnson hurling a 6-inning no-no agaiinst Dominican in February.

The Seawolves backed Paquin with timely offense, scoring in the second on an RBI triple by Olivia Gabriel and an RBI single from Newcomb. Iris Bejarano added an RBI single in the fifth to give the Seawolves an insurance run.

Offensively, Houston and Newcomb led the way again with two hits each, while Bejarano and Taylor Rapp each added doubles in a nine-hit effort.

These two teams will square off again tomorrow for the final home doubleheader for Sonoma State.  The Seawolves will honor their five seniors in a ceremony following the games.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11:00 am.
