ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Sonoma State Softball has officially entered postseason play and facing a "win or go home" matchup on the first day of the CCAA Tournament, the Seawolves did not disappoint. Thanks to another stellar outing in the circle from ace Charlie Johnson and clutch at-bats late in the game, Sonoma rallied to secure a 3-1 win!
Another day, another Charlie Johnson complete game. The 1st Team All-CCAA team member posted seven full innings of work, faced 27 different batters and held the Coyotes of San Bernardino to a single run. Johnson did not walk a single batter while also forcing 19 combined groundouts or flyouts. The Seawolves star was dialed in and was a big factor in her team moving to the next round of play.
Offensively, it was a slow start for the Seawolves. Thankfully, the team's defense was stellar throughout. Some of their top plays included throwing out a runner at third from right field thanks to a great relay including Olivia Gabriel, Kaiya Dickens and Lauren Mirtoni. Arguably, the biggest play of the game came courtesy of Mirtoni once again in the top of the sixth inning. With no outs and runners on both second and first, Mirtoni made a great grab along the baseline, touched third base and threw the runner out at first as well!
The team's offense came alive in the sixth inning where an Iris Bejarano single, when facing a full count, drove in the tying run. Kaiya Dickens would then launch a ball deep out to center field where her sacrifice fly would secure a second run. After a timely drawn walk by Taylor Rapp, team captain Carissa Marquez would tack on one final run for good measure with a single right up the middle giving the Seawolves a 3-1 lead they would never relinquish!
The Seawolves rallied on their home field in a must win game giving them 20 victories over their last 25 games. They now face their toughest test with a matchup against the tournament's number one overall seed, the East Bay Pioneers. Don't count out the Seawolves who are loaded with talent, incredibly well coached and most importantly, have championship pedigree in spades!
