Joe Hunter, who spent 17 seasons as the head men's soccer coach at fellow CCAA-member San Francisco State University, is back for his fourth season as a member of the Sonoma State University men's soccer coaching staff in 2017.
Hunter, who resides in nearby Novato, Calif., is a former student-athlete and assistant coach of the SSU men's soccer program, earning his Bachelor's Degree from Sonoma State in 1987.
During his time at San Francisco State, Hunter served as the chairperson for the NCAA Division II West Region Playoff Selection Committee and a voting member of the NCAA Division II National Soccer Committee. As a coach, he maintains an "A" license for the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the highest coaching level in the United States. Hunter holds memberships with the USSF Coaches Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He was previously a staff member of the USSF for Region IV working with the Olympic Development Program as an evaluator and coach and served the same duties with the California Youth Soccer Association.
Prior to taking over the head coaching reigns at SFSU in 1995, Hunter served as an assistant with the men's team for five seasons. During his tenure as assistant, Hunter was the primary recruiter for the men's program while assisting the women's program in varying capacities. In 17 seasons at the helm of the SF State program, he compiled a record of 111-211-24.
Hunter landed at SFSU after spending six seasons as a player and assistant coach at Sonoma State, where he was a two-time All-Conference player in 1986-87, also earning an All-Region honor as a senior. Prior to playing at SSU, Hunter earned All-Conference honors twice at Santa Rosa JC.
