One would be hard pressed to find a coach or professor that is as well liked and respected as Dr. Bob Sorani.
A faculty member in the Physical Education Department at Sonoma State University for nearly 30 years, Bob as more than just a coach to the men and women on the track and field and cross country teams. He was also their friend and biggest supporter.
"My role was not to coach them to success, but to guide them so that they could achieve their own success," he said. "I was always as proud of the 'non-champion who preformed his or her personal best, as I was the 'winners' and 'champions.'"
During the span of his time as track and field coach, Bob guided his student-athletes to quite a bit of success. A combined seven All-Americans, one national champion, one national record holder, eight individual conference champions and eight national qualifiers.
In 1980, Bob directed and oversaw the track renovation project and agreed to return as coach to assure continuation of the sport. He was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1987, his final year of coaching, and retired from Sonoma State University in 1993.
