WALNUT CREEK, Calif - Juniors
Ian Bridges and
Kris Haycock highlighted a group of ten Sonoma State players that were honored by the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), in voting announced Tuesday. Bridges was tabbed the CCAA's Most Valuable Player while Haycock was selected as Newcomer of the Year. Sonoma State head coach
John Goelz was named CCAA Coach of the Year as well.
Goelz, in his 23rd season at the helm, was named the conference's top coach for the second year in a row and the seventh time in his career. His Seawolves are currently 42-12 and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation this season. SSU will enter this week's CCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed after rolling to a 26-8 conference record. Goelz was also honored as conference coach of the year in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1998, 2001, and 2007.
Bridges, a junior from Valencia, led the conference in batting at .412. He also had five home runs and 39 RBIs. A first baseman/catcher, Bridges hit a CCAA-high .410 in league play this season. He becomes the second Seawolf to win the award in as many years as B.J. Collom was named MVP in 2007. He is the fifth SSU player to be named CCAA Player of the Year since the team joined the conference in 1999, joining the likes of Derek Bell, Feh Lentini, Brandon Burgess, and Collom.
Haycock, a junior from Tehachapi, came to SSU this season from Fresno City College. During CCAA play, hehit .346 with 16 steals and 25 RBIs. His overall numbers are highlighted by a .339 average and team-high totals of 20 steals and 44 runs scored. The CCAA Newcomer of the Year Award was won last year by
Tyrese McDaniel of SSU.
In addition to his MVP honors, Bridges was named First Team All-CCAA. He was joined on the First Team by catcher
Konrad Thieme, third baseman
Dave Herman and pitcher
Matt Means. Thieme has a team-high 14 home runs, Herman is batting .327 with 15 steals, and Means is 7-1 with a 1.97 ERA.
Joining
Kris Haycock with Second Team All-CCAA honors were second baseman
