Seawolves Lose Exhibition Opener At Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif- Junior Olivia Larkin scored a game-high 13 points and freshman Nadia Williams came off the bench to add 10 but Santa Clara shot 46 percent from the field, helping the Broncos to defeat Sonoma State 73-43 in women's exhibition basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center.

The Seawolves played close with the Broncos, a member of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference, when a three-pointer by Larkin put Sonoma State down by only four with 10:34 remaining in the first half. However, a 12-3 run before halftime gave Santa Clara a 35-17 lead at the intermission.

Sonoma State was held to just 21 percent from the field on 7-of-33 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Santa Clara shot at a blazing 43 percent.

The Broncos then jumped out to a 30 point lead with eight minutes remaining, putting the game out of reach.

Larkin's 13 and Williams' 10 led the Seawolves offensively and senior Stephanie Barnes had a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Aly Conway grabbed five boards including three offensively.

Santa Clara was led by three different players that had 12 points apiece, including Lena Gipson who added nine boards.

Sonoma State will wrap up its exhibition schedule on Wednesday when they take on San Francisco at 7 p.m. before opening the regular season schedule on Nov. 20 against Texas A&M-International at theCoslet Classic, hosted by Chico State.
