Men's Basketball Loses To Wrap Up Exhibition Play

SANTA BARBARA, Calif- Every Sonoma State player scored on Saturday afternoon but a combination of a long, brutal road trip and solid play by a Division I basketball team proved to be the difference as the Seawolves fell to UC Santa Barbara, 101-64, at The Thunderdome.

The loss wraps up a winless two-game exhibition schedule for the Seawolves against stiff Division I competition in which Sonoma State faced Pacific-10 Conference member Stanford and Big West Conference member UCSB within 20 hours of each other.

Sonoma State played toe-to-toe with the Gauchos deep into the first half and forced a 11-11 tie at one point. However, UC Santa Barbara would go off on a 25-2 run before leading at halftime 53-26.

In the second half, the Gauchos were able to hold off the Seawolves and went ahead by as much as 40 points at one point.

Led by freshman Sterling Arterberry and junior Mike Nelson with eight points apiece, the Seawolves shot 42 percent from the floor on 21-of-50 shooting. The Gauchos, however, shot a blazing 63 percent on the afternoon. Five players, including the 21 points of Orlando Johnson, scored in double-figures for a UCSB team that out-assisted Sonoma State 25-9.

Sonoma State will open up regular season play on Nov. 20 when it hosts the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at Rohnert Park. Humboldt State will take on Concordia-Irvine before the Seawolves hit the hardwood to tangle with Hawaii Pacific in the first game of the 2009-10 season.

Box Score: UC Santa Barbara 101, Sonoma State 64
