Seawolves Get Rematch With Toros At West Regional

The Seawolves will get another shot at the Toros this weekend.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State men's soccer team drew the No. 3 seed for this weekend's NCAA West Regional Tournament, meaning a rematch with the No. 2 seed, Cal State Dominguez Hills, is on the ticket.  The Seawolves and Toros, fresh off their battle for the CCAA Championship on Sunday, will meet in the first of two regional semifinals at 4:00 pm on Friday in Los Angeles.

As the No. 1 seed, Cal State L.A. (17-3-1) is the tournament host.  The Golden Eagles will take on the No. 4 seed, Cal State San Bernardino (15-5-1).  The four teams that will compete in the NCAA West Regional are the same four that were featured in last weekend's CCAA Championship Tournament.

"We are excited to be in the NCAA Tournament because anything can happen," said Sonoma State head coach Marcus Ziemer, "We knew we had a chance to be selected, but after getting snubbed in 2006, we don't take anything for granted."

Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-5-1) came back to win the CCAA Championship game over Sonoma State (14-4-4) on Sunday, 3-2, with the winning goal coming on a penalty kick.  The match, in which Sonoma led with less than four minutes left in regulation, is fresh in the minds of the Seawolves.

"We have a great rivalry with Dominguez Hills and were hoping to play them in the first round," said Ziemer, "Especially after battling them and giving up the lead in the last few minutes of the CCAA Final this past Sunday.

Cal State Dominguez Hills took both meetings between the teams this year, including their 2-0 win in the regular season at Sonoma State.  All-time, the Seawolves have a 1-5-1 record against the Toros in the NCAA's, though they did beat them on penalty kicks for the regional title in 2008.

"They have beaten us twice this season, but as we found out last year in the NCAA Tournament against Cal State L.A., it is tough to beat a program three times in one year.  We will be ready," said Ziemer.

The Seawolves will be making their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament and eighth in the history of the program.  All-time, the Seawolves have a record of 10-4-3 in the NCAA's, with a national championship in 2002 and regional titles in 1991, 2002, and 2007.

Sonoma State's last two trips to the NCAA Tournament have ended in penalty kick defeats, including last year when the Seawolves tied Cal State L.A. 1-1, only to get eliminated in PKs.
