Moran Top Pitcher; Seven Named To All-CCAA Team

Gary Moran leads the Seawolves into this week's CCAA Tournament
WALNUT CREEK, Calif-  Sonoma State senior Gary Moran has been named the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Year, it was announced Wednesday by the conference office.  Moran's honor highlights an impressive haul for the Seawolves as seven players earned All-CCAA status.

Moran becomes the second Sonoma player in the last three years to be named CCAA Pitcher of the Year (Brent Lysander earned the award in 2007).  He is the sixth player in school history to be named his conference's top pitcher.  Moran is 6-2 on the season with a CCAA-best 1.41 ERA that would rank third in school history for a single season.  The Madera native was also named First Team All-CCAA.

Joining Moran on the First Team was catcher Ian Bridges.  The 2008 CCAA Most Valuable Player, Bridges is batting .336 with four home runs and 20 runs batted in this season.

Second Team selections from Sonoma State included shortstop Leo Avila (.354, 2 home runs, 25 RBIs), center fielder Kyle Jones (.313, 6 home runs, 30 RBIs), and pitcher Morgan Rodriguez (5-0, 2.84 ERA).

Kris Haycock (.341) and Brian Flint (2-1, 2.42, 6 saves) earned Honorable Mention nods.

Jon Alia of Cal State Dominguez Hills was named the 2009 CCAA Most Valuable Player.  Adam Arakawa of Chico State and Aaron Brooks of Cal State San Bernardino were honored as Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, respectively.  Dan O'Brien of UC San Diego picked up Coach of the Year honors.

The Seawolves (30-12) open up the CCAA Championship Tournament on Thursday night against Cal State L.A..  Sonoma State is looking for their third consecutive conference title and sixth since joining the CCAA in 1999.
