ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State senior Gary Moran, the 2009 CCAA and West Region Pitcher of the Year, has been selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 41st round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Moran was also named a Second Team All-American by all three major voting organizations, Daktronics, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
A native of Madera, Moran was 7-2 with a 1.37 ERA in 2009, leading the Seawolves to the championship game of the NCAA West Region. His earned run average is the best in school history among starting pitchers and it ranked third in the entire nation.
For his career, Moran, a transfer from Fresno City College, finished 15-5 with a 2.26 ERA. That earned run average is the second-best figure in the record books at Sonoma State.
Moran becomes the first Sonoma State player drafted by the Giants since Darren Sack in 2004. He is also the 30th player overall to be drafted from Sonoma since head coach John Goelz came to campus in 1986. In the last 24 years, over 75 players have signed professional contracts.
