BERKELEY, Calif- Senior
Ben Washington scored a game-high 18 points in the first half and Sonoma State trailed Division I California by just eight points at the half, but the Golden Bears dominated the second half of play and cruised to a 106-76 victory over the Seawolves on Wednesday evening at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
Sonoma State wrapped up its exhibition schedule and will begin regular season play on Nov. 19, hosting Notre Dame de Namur at the tenth annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in Rohnert Park.
"I was really proud of our guys," head coach
Pat Fuscaldo said. "We had a lot of fun in the first half. In the second half, it was only a matter of time until (California) broke out. (Ben) Washington was the best player on the court in the first half. I knew they would come out and turn up the pressure in the second half, and they did, and we didn't respond.
In the opening half, Sonoma State played neck-and-neck with Cal and trailed just two points at 20-18 with 11:38 to go in the first half. However, the Golden Bears went on a 10-1 run over the next three minutes.
Will Olsem ended the run with a three ball to trail by just eight points at 30-22. The Seawolves continued to hold their own behind the hot shooting of Washington, who led all scorers with 18 first-half points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting (5-of-5 from three-point land).
Despite being outrebounded 23-11 in the opening 20 minutes of the half and outscored 16-5 at the free throw line, Sonoma State sprinted into the locker room with down just eight points, 52-44, to last year's regular season Pac-10 champion.
Both teams shot an identical 15-of-32 from the floor, but it was the Seawolves who found their stroke from beyond the three-point arc, connecting on 50 percent of their shots from downtown. California made six three's in the half (6-13). It was at the free throw line, though, that the Division I power controlled the scoreboard, making 16-17 from the charity stripe by putting Sonoma State in early foul trouble.
California made the necessary adjustments in the locker room at halftime and went on a 11-0 run to open up the second half of play to take a commanding 63-44 lead, just 2:48 into the period. Sonoma State kept California within reach, but the Golden Bears extended its lead to 28 points (93-65) with six minutes remaining in the game.
The Seawolves remained cold from the floor the rest of the way, as the team shot 32.1 percent in the final half (40 percent for the game). The Golden Bears held Washington scoreless after halftime and continued to outrebound the Division II program from Rohnert Park; a 45-27 margin in the contest.
Washington led the Seawolves with 18 points.
Steve Lackey,
Sterling Arterberry and
Will Olsem also scored in double-figures, draining 12, 10, and 10 points, respectively.
California, who was led by the 22 points of Allen Crabbe, had four players with 10 or more points.
"(Cal) is much bigger than us," Fuscaldo added. "I thought that we put our bodies on them and we did as much as we could, but we got a little carried away and got caught up in their game in the second half. We had some nice little spirts were we looked pretty good, but we had more where we didn't. Cal makes you play that way.
Said Fuscaldo to finish, "Our real season starts Friday. The car has been revvin' for some time and we're ready to go. Let's pop that clutch and move forward."
