PASO ROBLES, Calif- Needing a big comeback in the final round to capture their third straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship, the Sonoma State men's golf team faded down the stretch, coasting to a third place finish in a field of eight. The Seawolves finished 19 strokes behind Cal State Monterey Bay, who captured their first-ever CCAA golf title.
The Seawolves trailed by nine strokes entering Tuesday's final round action. After several holes, it looked like the Seawolves might make a run at the leaders, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Stanislaus. However, on the back nine, the Seawolves scuffled and, in the end, turned in their highest score (300) of the three-round event.
Janssen Todd was the Seawolves' top finisher on Tuesday (72) and in the tournament overall, placing seventh at 73-72-72--217. Two-time All-American
Patrick Bauer was unable to sustain the momentum he built after Monday's second round 69, shooting 75-69-74--218 for the tournament to finish ninth.
Ryan Carter (72-73-75--220) finished 14th,
Alex Marry (79-67-80--226) was 22nd and #Jeremy Wndelken (74-76-79--229) placed 29th.
Marry, a freshman from San Clemente, had the lowest round of the tournament, posting a 67 in round two on Monday.
Cal State Monterey Bay entered Monday's play with a one stroke advantage over Cal State Stanislaus and held on to it, but just barely. Both the Otters and Warriors shot 289 on Tuesday to give CSUMB the one-stroke victory.
The Seawolves held a healthy eight-stroke lead over Cal State San Bernardino and a 14-stroke edge over Chico State, the No. 1 team in the nation, according to GolfStat.
Up next for the Seawolves will be the NCAA West Region Championship, to be played May 3rd through 5th in Palm Desert.
