KINGSTON, Wash- Sonoma State's
Jeremy Wendelken fired a final round of 2-under par 70 to capture the 84th Washington State Golf Association Men's Amateur Championship, held last week at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Washington. Wendelken finished the championship at 2-under 286 overall and was the only player in the field to break par.
Wendelken began final round action one stroke behind 54-hole leader Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho but quickly made that up with a birdie on the first hole. He would make two more birdies on the front nine, but offset those with four bogeys to make the turn at 1-over par and trail Williams by one stroke.
Williams would struggle on the back nine and Wendelken was able to make up ground and more by making pars on holes #10-#15. He sat in a tie for the lead after 15 holes with Bordeaux and Kevin Penner of Sammamish, Wash. until catching fire over the final three holes. Wendelken finished with a spectacular birdie, birdie, birdie finish to win by three strokes capping it with an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
With the victory, Wendelken earns an exemption into the Sahalee Players Championship being played in two weeks, and an invitation onto the WSGA Morse Cup team at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship played the end of July. He joins an impressive list of past WSGA Men's Amateur champions that includes Fred Couples, Brock Mackenzie, and Alex Prugh.
Wendelken, who just completed his sophomore season for the Seawolves this Spring, was a GCAA/Ping Division II All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2009-10. He held the distinction of turning in the lowest round of any golfer all season, when he carded a 66 on his way to first place honors at the Dominican Invitational. His per round average of 75.0 ranked second on the team and he finished in the top 15 at both the NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship Tournaments.
