ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to announce the 2010 induction class of the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Ed Beaulac, Patricia Carrillo, Fehlandt Lentini, and Tim Walsh will be honored for their athletic excellence and contributions to the history of Sonoma State University athletics.
Ed Beaulac enjoyed an outstanding two-year career as a place kicker on the Sonoma State football team. A First Team All-Conference selection in both of his seasons, 1989 and 1990, Beaulac never missed an extra point in his time at SSU. In a 1990 game against Saint Mary's, Beaulac booted a 60-yard field goal, which still ranks eighth all-time in the NCAA Division II record books. Following his senior season at Sonoma, Beaulac went to training camp with the Houston Oilers, before a leg injury cut his career short.
Patricia Carrillo played for the Sonoma State women's soccer team from 1983 to 1985. Though complete statistical records don't exist for those teams, we do know that Carrillo scored five goals in 1983 for a league champion Cossack side that went 13-2-3 overall. She also scored eight goals in 1985. Perhaps the most meaningful statement towards Carrillo's ability comes from her former coach and a fellow SSU Athletics Hall of Famer, Peter Reynaud, who said, "No player had a larger influence on the outcome of a game than Patti."
A two-year star for the Sonoma State baseball team,
Fehlandt Lentini got his career underway in 1998, batting .309 and stealing 15 bases. Following a two-year absence from the team, Lentini returned in 2001 and really made a name for himself. Turning in perhaps the greatest single season in school history, Lentini established school records for batting average (.427), hits (117), doubles (23), triples (10), and runs (89) that still stand to this day. SSU's all-time leader in career batting average (.385), Lentini was a First Team All-American in '01. He was also the West Region and CCAA Player of the Year during his remarkable senior campaign. Following the 2001 season, Lentini was signed by the Houston Astros, an organization he played with for several years before taking his career to the independent leagues, where he still plays.
Sonoma State's head football coach from 1989 to 1992,
Tim Walsh compiled a 27-14 record in his four years at the helm. None of his 27 wins, however, were more important than his 1991 victory over UC Davis that gave the Cossacks their first-ever NCAC title. That '91 team finished 9-2 and was the second-highest ranked team in the state of California, behind Sacramento State. The 1991 team has already been inducted into the Hall of Fame and Walsh becomes the first football coach to be inducted. Following his time at Sonoma State, Walsh went on to spend 14 seasons as the head coach at Portland State. After a couple of seasons as an assistant at Army, Walsh was named head coach of the Cal Poly football team prior to the 2009 season.
The induction ceremony will be held on October 2, 2010 at the Green Music Center on the Sonoma State University campus. For ticket information or more details, contact Megan Christensen at (707) 664-2750 or visit the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame web site by clicking
