Attard, Seawolves Trail Wildcats By Five Shots At SSU Invite

SANTA ROSA, Calif- Ian Attard fired a career-low 71 to open play on Monday, leading the Sonoma State men's golf team to trail fourth-ranked Chico State by five strokes with 18 holes to play at the Sonoma State Men's Golf Invitational, taking place at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. Attard is tied for fifth with a two-over-par 144, two shots behind Cal State Monterey Bay's Jered Stone.

Attard carded a 71 in his first 18 holes, his best round in 11 this season. He followed it up with a 73 in the second round and sits tied with three other golfers -- Chico State's Eric Frazzetta and Stanford's Marcel Puyat and Patrick Grimes. Jeremy Wendelken is tied for ninth after rounds of 74 and 71 (+3; 145) while Eric Ash shot a 74 and 73 (+5; 147) to place 13th after 36 holes. Steven Warne (+7; 74-75--149) is tied for 17th and Jordan Guillen (+11; 78-75--153) is 28th.

Four other Seawolves also played on Monday, but competed as individuals. Alex Marry is tied for 21st after shooting a 76-74--150 (+8), Kyle Listar fired a career-best 71 in his second-ever collegiate round to match Marry at +8 (79-71--150), Cole Pickavance carded a 80-75--155 (+13) and is tied for 32nd while Daniel Slovis (+23; 83-82--165) is 41st.

All nine Seawolves are chasing CSUMB's Stone (E; 142), who leads Andre DeDecker (Stanford), Kyle Souza (Chico State) and Blake Ahlin (Cal State East Bay) by one shot. DeDecker carded the lowest round of the tournament so far, firing a 69 in round two.

Chico State, which is ranked No. 4 in latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Top 25 College Coaches' Poll, holds a five-stroke lead over the host Seawolves, sporting a +12 (580) through two rounds. Sonoma State (+17; 585) is ahead of Cal State East Bay (+26; 594) by nine shots, followed by Notre Dame de Namur (+29; 597), UC San Diego (+35; 603), Cal State Monterey Bay (+39; 607) and Dominican (+74; 642). Stanford has only four competitors; therefore, it is not eligible for a team score.

The third and final round of the SSU Invitational will tee off at 8:00 a.m. in Santa Rosa.
