SANTA ROSA, Calif-
Jeremy Wendelken scored his second Top 5 finish of the season, shooting a five-over-par 218 to lead the Sonoma State men's golf team to a second place finish at its own Sonoma State Men's Golf Invitational, played at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club on Monday and Tuesday. Chico State won the event for the fourth time in five years with help from medalist Kyle Souza, who fired a final round-low 69 on Tuesday.
Wendelken tied for fifth with rounds of 74, 71 and 73 on the Par 71, 6,686-yard course in Santa Rosa, finishing six shots back of Souza, who is the reigning NCAA Division II Men's Golf Individual Champion.
Steven Warne (74-75-71) carded a 71 in Tuesday's final round to place ninth after a +7 (220) performance in the 54-hole event.
Eric Ash (74-73-75) and
Ian Attard (71-73-78) both scored a +9 (222) to tie for 13th while
Jordan Guillen (78-75-78) tied for 32nd with a three-round score of +18 (231).
Four other Seawolves competed as individuals in the SSU Invitational this week, including
Alex Marry (76-74-71--221), who finished just one stroke back of Wendelken.
Kyle Listar (79-71-76--226) was placed in a tie for 20th,
Cole Pickavance (80-75-79--234) finished tied for 36th and
Daniel Slovis (83-82-94--259) came in at 43rd.
Chico State's Souza (72-71-69--212) pulled away with the two stroke victory over Stanford's Andre DeDecker (74-69-71--214). Souza and DeDecker carded the lowest rounds of the tournament (69), albeit on different days. Stanford's Marcel Puyat shot three rounds of 72 to finish third at +3 (216), followed by Chico State's Eric Frazetta (70-74-73--217; +4).
Chico State, ranked No. 4 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll (released on Nov. 2), scored an 870 (+18) this week, topping 12th-ranked Sonoma State (882; +30) by 12 strokes. Notre Dame de Namur (891; +39) finished third, UC San Diego (903; +51) placed fourth and defending national champion and 13th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (906; +54) came in at fifth. Cal State East Bay (908; +56) and Dominican (966; +114) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
Sonoma State will take a three month break from competition before returning to action on Feb. 27-28, 2012 at the CSUSB Coyote Invitational in San Bernardino.
