Aly Conway scored a team-high 12 points, adding three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 18-point halftime deficit in Monday's 62-56 loss to visiting Chico State at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves fall to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA as the Wildcats improve to 6-3 (3-2 CCAA).
The Seawolves got off to somewhat of a slow start, hitting just 6 of 21 shots (28.6 percent) in the opening 20 minutes of the game. It helped the Wildcats jump out to a large 20-4 lead with 9:42 left in the first half. However, Sonoma State began its comeback and got to within eight points at 20-12 three minutes later. Chico State would extend its lead to as much as 22 points (36-14) at the 2:17 mark, en route to a 18-point halftime lead at 39-21.
The second half would become a different story as SSU chipped away at the lead, despite the face that the Wildcats led by as much as 22 points with 14:58 left in the game (49-27). In fact, the Seawolves even came to within three points at 59-56 with 27 seconds left in the game on a layup by
Alysa Ito. But, three free throws by Chico State in the final 25 seconds would seal the Wildcat victory.
Conway would score five of her team-high 12 points in the second half.
Tori Carroll and
Taylor Vigil each scored eight points for Sonoma State and
Marie Sweet grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds and had two blocks, one steal and one assist. All in all, the Seawolves hit 33.3 percent of their shots (18-54), including 6 of 11 from downtown.
For Chico State, Synchro Bull led all scorers with 16 points and Jazmine Miller netted 15 points and corralled a team-high seven boards. The Wildcats connected on 37.9 percent of their shots (22-58) and outrebounded the Seawolves, 39-36.
Sonoma State will step out of conference action on Thursday, Dec. 29, when it hosts William Jessup at Haehl Pavilion on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
