Seawolves Just Short In Upset Bid Against No. 16 Broncos

Jaclyn Bisordi had 14 points on Saturday night.
BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State tied their season-high with eight three-pointers, including a halfcourt buzzer beater by Jaclyn Bisordi, but it wouldn't be enough as the 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos held on for a narrow 52-50 win at The Wolves' Den on Saturday night.  The Seawolves turned in one of their finest performances of the year against their highest-ranked opponent since 2010.  However, in the end, they saw their record dip to 5-9, 3-7 CCAA.  The Broncos improve to 11-2, 7-2 CCAA.

A slow start plagued the Seawolves on Saturday night.  Held scoreless for nearly five minutes to start the game, once they found their rhythm, however, good things began to happen.  Over a five-minute stretch from 15:04 to 10:04, the Seawolves outscored the Broncos 13-0 to open up a seven-point lead (13-6).  The lead would swell to seven several more times in the first half before a 9-1 Cal Poly Pomona run gave the visitors a 21-20 lead at the break.

The first half would be one of streaks for Sonoma State.  In the first 4:56 and the final 4:54 of the half, they scored just one point, combined.  It was a stellar run through the middle of the half that had them keeping pace with the defending west region champions.

Sonoma State would take a 24-23 lead early in the second half, but an 11-0 Bronco surge put Cal Poly Pomona up by ten just over seven minutes in.  While the Seawolves would hang around, they didn't begin their final run until the game's last minute.

Trailing by seven, Travis Newman swished a three-pointer with 31 seconds left to make the score 48-44.  After two free throws by the Broncos, another Newman trey cut the lead to three, but with just five seconds left, the Seawolves hopes were slim.

Those slim hopes all but disappeared two seconds later when Rosslyn Beard sank a pair of free throws to give the Broncos a five-point lead with just three ticks remaining.  While the game's result was already settled, Bisordi gave the fans one more reason to cheer when her half-court heave rattled home to set the final margin at 52-50.

The Seawolves shot 45.2% on the night and 8-for-14 (57.1%) from three-point territory.  They outrebounded the Broncos 31-24, but were plagued by 23 turnovers. Bisordi led the Seawolves with 14 points off the bench.  Kristina Fahey had nine points and six rebounds.

The Broncos shot poorly from the charity stripe nearly the whole game.  They went 4-for-4 in the final 15 seconds, but just 6-for-18 the rest of the time.  Jennifer Bryant had 14 points to lead the Broncos.

The Seawolves will try to rebound when they hit the road next weekend at UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino.
