BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men's basketball team continued their torrid play on Saturday night with a convincing 70-64 upset of No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona before an enthusastic crowd at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. Led by 18 points from sharpshooting
Will Olsem, the Seawolves led by as many as 17 in the second half as they won for the fifth time in their last six outings, improving to 7-7, 5-5 CCAA. The Broncos drop to 9-3, 6-3 CCAA.
Following a 2-6 start to the season, the Seawolves have gone 5-1 with wins over some of the top squads in the CCAA, including two nationally-ranked opponents.
Sonoma got out of the gates quickly on Saturday, hitting two of their eight three-pointers in the first six minutes to open up a 15-7 lead. After the Broncos trimmed the lead to two (23-21), the Seawolves found a second wind, eventually going on a 9-0 run to go up 35-23 with 3:22 left in the first.
Leading by 12 at the break (37-25), the Seawolves came out of the locker room blazing as Olsem sank a three just four seconds in to put the Seawolves up 15. That lead would grow to 17 on three occasions, the last at 60-43, before things got a bit interesting.
Frustrated by an intense defensive effort, the Seawolves went cold, scoring just three points over the next six and a half minutes. During that span, the Broncos chipped away at the lead, narrowing the gap to three at 64-61 on a three by Bryce Brady with 59 seconds left.
A layup by
Jason Walter, followed by four straight free throws, however, would give the Seawolves the cushion they'd need to cruise through the final seconds.
For the second straight night, Olsem led all scorers, pumping in 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting. He hit four three-pointers, giving him 11 for the weekend.
Sterling Arterberry collected a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds,
Patrick Scott had 13 points and seven rebounds, and
Steven Pratt dished out eight assists.
