BOX SCORE Sonoma State 92, Cal State Monterey Bay 77 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Patrick Scott tied his career-high in points on Friday, netting 28 on 7 of 9 from the hardwood, including 4 of 6 from three-point range, in addition to 10 of 13 from the free throw line, leading the sharpshooting Sonoma State men's basketball team to a convincing 92-77 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA opener for both teams on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves improve to 2-1 this season, with a 1-0 start in conference action. The Otters fall to 3-3 and 0-1 in the CCAA.
Friday night was not just another milestone night for Scott, but it was also one for senior teammate
Will Olsem. With three three-pointers against CSUMB, Olsem broke the career record for most three-pointers made all-time -- he now has drained 217 shots from long range, passing former Seawolf Andrew Kochevar's (2003-08) record of 214. Olsem went 3 of 5 from deep and added a 4 for 4 effort at the charity stripe to score 13 points in Friday's win.
Jason Walter also netted 13 points, followed by 11 from
Emmanuel Bradford.
Justin Herold corralled 11 rebounds to lead all players in that category while dropping in eight points of his own.
While the Seawolves trailed early on, it wouldn't last long. In fact, SSU only trailed for the first 2:03 of the contest, then it was all Sonoma the rest of the way. While the hosts would enjoy a double-digit lead for most of the night, Cal State Monterey Bay wouldn't go away quietly. The Otters would chip away at a 19-point deficit with 13 minutes left in the ball game to come within just six points at 76-70 with 3:20 to play in regulation. However, a three-ball by Scott, then 13 consecutive points by way of the charity stripe helped the Seawolves extend their lead again to hold off the Otters for the 92-77 win.
Sonoma State shot 59.1 percent from the floor on 26 for 44 shooting, including a hot 9 for 16 from long range. The Seawolves also scored 31 of their 92 points at the free throw line, connecting on 31 of 44 charity shots, including 23 of 32 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Cal State Monterey Bay was led by the 17 points of Brandon Ward and 16 points from Alex Fertig, as the team shot 41.3 percent from the hardwood (26-63).
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting Cal State East Bay at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
