WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Sonoma State junior
Samantha Lipperd has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Year for her stellar performance over the course of the 2012 softball season. Lipperd, a native of Boulder Creek, leads the nation in strikeouts and has established new single-season school records in strikeouts and wins. Joining Lipperd on the All-CCAA team was her battery mate, senior catcher
Skylynn Myers.
In addition to her Pitcher of the Year honor, Lipperd earned First Team All-CCAA accolades for the second straight year. Her statistics this season are simply staggering. The right-hander is 30-10 with a 1.23 ERA and she has more strikeouts (375) than any
team in the CCAA. Since taking over as the team's only pitcher in late March, Lipperd has gone 15-4 with 11 shutouts. She has not allowed a run in her last 33.1 innings of work and she's heavily responsible for the eight-game winning streak the Seawolves ended the regular season on. Her finest performance of the season came on March 30th when she set a new NCAA Division II record with 26 strikeouts in a win over Hawaii Pacific. Lipperd becomes the second Sonoma State student-athlete to earn CCAA Pitcher of the Year honors, following Lindsay Emmel in 2009.
A four-year performer for Sonoma State,
Skylynn Myers has been a leader both on and off the field. This season she is hitting .306 with a team-high 14 doubles to go along with three home runs and 24 RBIs. She has started all 52 games behind the plate this season and she must be credited for her contributions to the success of Sonoma State's pitching staff. Myers recently became the school's all-time leader in doubles (36) and she ranks seventh all-time with 156 hits. She was also a Second Team All-CCAA selection last season.
Hailey Stockman of Chico State was named the CCAA's Most Valuable Player. Freshman of the Year went to Cori Reinhardt of Cal State Monterey Bay and Christina Chavez of Cal State Dominguez Hills was named Newcomer of the Year. Chavez's coach, Jim Maier, was named Coach of the Year.
After sweeps of Cal State Stanislaus and San Francisco State, the Seawolves ended their regular season at 35-17. They are currently ranked fifth in the NCAA West Region poll and, should they remain in the top eight after this week, they'll advance to the NCAA Division II West Regional for the fourth consecutive year. Selections for the regional will be announced early on Monday, April 30th, so stay tuned to sonomaseawolves.com!
