Cal Poly Pomona 52, Sonoma State 43 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- On a night where seniors
Marie Sweet,
Alysa Ito,
Taylor Vigil and
Elizabeth Day were recognized before the game, the Sonoma State women's basketball team was unable to pull out a win, falling to Cal Poly Pomona 52-43. With the loss, the Seawolves see an end to their three-game winning streak. They fall to 9-15, 7-13 CCAA. The Broncos improve to 13-11, 11-9 CCAA with the victory.
After Friday night's 11-point win over Humboldt State, Sonoma State came out slow in the first half, netting just eleven points on 4-of-26 shooting.
Following a cold snap to start the game,
Bronte Sheahan was able to get the Seawolves on the board at the 16:34 mark after drilling a jumper from the elbow. Unfortunately, just nine points would follow in the first half as the Broncos led 19-11 at the break.
Cal Poly Pomona came out of the halftime hot and quickly extended their lead to 16. Slowly, but surely, the Seawolves would begin to chip away at the lead. Unfortunately, they'd run out of time.
Taylor Acosta converted a layup with 45 seconds left to slim the lead to five, but that's as close as Sonoma State could get.
Despite shooting a mere 15.4 percent in the first half, Sonoma State made up for it in the second half, shooting 48.1 percent from the hardwood.
Taylor Acosta scored 12 points- 10 in the second half- to lead the Seawolves on offense. In their final action at the Wolves' Den, Day netted eight points, while Vigil grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the team.
Ashley Boggs had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Broncos.
Sonoma State will have to go through UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino next week in their quest to qualify for their second straight CCAA Championship Tournament. USonoma State will face the Tritons on Thursday, Feb. 28 and the Coyotes on Friday, March 1. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm on both nights.
