BOX SCORE Cal Poly Pomona 57, Sonoma State 54 - Box Score
POMONA, Calif. -- The song remains the same for the Sonoma State men's basketball team. On Saturday evening, the Seawolves gave perennial power Cal Poly Pomona all they could handle, pushing the Broncos to the final minute, before falling 57-54. It was the third consecutive game that the Seawolves have lost by three points or less.
Sonoma State (1-11, 0-8 CCAA) got out to an early 9-3 lead before the Broncos (9-3, 7-1 CCAA) rallied to pull even, then ahead. Pomona would build a seven-point lead before settling on a 32-28 halftime edge.
Though Cal Poly Pomona held on to their lead throughout the first part of the second half, Sonoma refused to go away, clawing back to take a 39-38 lead on a
Michael Avery three-pointer with 13:16 to go. The Seawolves held the Broncos without a point for three and a half minutes before the game was drawn even again on a Quentin Taylor trey with 12:24 remaining.
Both teams' defenses would take control in the final ten minutes as they traded the lead back and forth.
With Sonoma trailing by two, the Broncos fouled
Justin Herold and sent him to the line for two. The senior hit one, making it a one-point game.
With 45 seconds left, the Broncos' DeRonn Scott was fouled following a missed shot by Herold. Given four shots (a technical was issued to the Sonoma bench), Scott was able to hit two, giving the Broncos a three-point cushion.
Scott was again at the line with 16 seconds left, hitting one free throw to make it 57-53. The Seawolves got to their own line with less than two ticks remaining, but following a made free throw, Avery's intentional miss was unable to be corralled by the Seawolves and the Broncos escaped with the win.
Mike Harris led the Seawolves in scoring with 13 points. Herold had eight rebounds and Avery was tops with three steals and three assists.
Taylor came off the bench to lead the Broncos with 15 points.
The Seawolves outshot the Broncos in all three categories: from the field, the free throw line, and three-point territory. They also had more rebounds, but were guilty of committing 18 turnovers to just 12 for Pomona.
The Seawolves return home following four in a row on the road next Friday when they host UC San Diego.
