Rich Shayewitz has announced the early signing of two junior college standouts – Stephen Dorsey and Naaman Hightower – who will both join the program in 2015-16.
Dorsey, a 6-foot-6 power forward from Monterey, Calif., is currently a sophomore at Monterey Peninsula College where he plays for former SSU assistant Blake Spiering. He is MPC's second-leading scorer this season averaging 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds through the first six games of the season.
A graduate of Monterey High School in 2012, Dorsey averaged a double-double throughout his prep career with 12.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to go along with 3.4 blocks. He was named the Monterey Bay League MVP in 2011 and twice earned All-Monterey County Boys Basketball Team and All-MBL accolades.
"Stephen is one of those special athletes that has eluded us because of various reasons," said Fuscaldo. "He's an amazing athlete, is an amazing jumper, has raw talent, raw athleticism,he plays above the rim, just a real strong kid. We feel that his athleticism will give us one of the missing pieces that we need for our team next year."
"He is a great kid, great student, real nice person to be around," Fuscaldo added.
Hightower, a 6-foot-8 center out of Fairfield, Calif., and a 2012 graduate of Vanden High School, is also a sophomore and playing for former SSU men's basketball great Steve Ball. He is NVC's leading rebounder, grabbing 7.0 boards per contest, adding 6.3 points a game.
"Naaman is one of those big guys with a 747 reach," Fuscaldo said. "He has good hands, and he's still in the journeyman stage, but working his way into becoming a better post player. We are lucky to get him because he has amazing potential -- we really think that in a year, he could be a good replacement for our posts now.
"For us to get big kids like Dorsey and Hightower is really an amazing accomplishment for us and they will really help our program," added Fuscaldo. "I am really excited about both of them."
