DENVER, Colo. -- After a pair of successful rounds on Monday at the NCAA National Preview in which the Sonoma State men's golf team found itself in seventh place at three-over-par, the Seawolves struggled in the third and final round on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 15th place out of 22 teams at Green Valley Ranch Golf Course in Denver, Colo., which will serve as the host course of the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships in May.
Sonoma finished with a 54-hole score of 888 (291-288-309; +24) after shooting 21-over-par on Tuesday. Chico State ran away with the tournament title by 13 strokes over Nova Southeastern (857) and Barry (857), firing an 844 (-20) for the tournament. Cal State Monterey Bay placed fourth with 859 (-5) and Central Missouri placed fifth at 868 (+4).

Kenny Maroney was the overall leader of the tournament after the opening round on Monday, shooting a tournament-low (and career-best) 66 to lead all 110 participants through 18 holes. However, he followed it with a 79 in the second round, dropping into a tie for 25th place at one-over-par 145 before ending the week with a 76 on Tuesday, tying for 39th place with an overall score of 221 (+5).
Justin Shluker was the only other Seawolf to score under 70 in any round, firing a 69 in round two after opening with a 76, tying with Maroney in 25th place after two rounds. Shluker then shot a 77 on Tuesday to tie for 49th at 222 (+6) with teammate
Nicolas Daniels (74-72-76--222; +6).
Brandon Lee (77-71-80--228; +12) tied for 78th while
Mathew Potter made his Sonoma State debut, carding a 75-76-82--233 (+17) to tie for 89th.
Chico's Alistair Docherty took home medalist honors for carding three consecutive rounds of 69, totaling a 207 (-9) for the week, holding off four other golfers that tied for second place at 209 (-7), including his teammate Matt Hutchins.
Sonoma State will head to Las Cruces, New Mexico next week for the NCAA Regional Preview at University Golf Club, the host site of the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Golf West Region Tournament.
