A three-sport standout for the Cossacks in the early days of the athletic program, Bennie was a member of SSU's first football team in 1969 where he recorded the most tackles and was twice named the team's outstanding defensive lineman.  He later signed a professional contract with the World Football League.

Bennie captured the Far Western Conference heavyweight wrestling title and finished seventh at the NCAA wrestling championships.  In addition to his football and wrestling exploits, Bennie lettered in the hammer throw in 1971.
