In January of 2025, Sonoma State University was stripped of all of its Division II athletic programs due to budget deficits.

With no warning, student athletes' lives changed. Luckily, if you are a student at Sonoma State looking to stay involved in sports activities, the rec center located in the Seawolf Plaza has all you need to get signed up for recreational intramural or club sports.

Sonoma State has many on campus intramural sports such as flag football, volleyball, basketball, and much more. You can sign up in the rec center either with a group of friends, or as a free agent if you are an individual looking for some fun. The only requirements to sign up are that you are currently a student/staff member or a registered Sonoma State alumni and have an existing Rec Center membership. This is all completely free as well! This is a great option for those students who love casual competition or just need a new hobby!

Intramural sports, however, is not the only option for students looking to face some competition. Sonoma State students are also able to choose from a selection of club sports, which offer a much more competitive environment for those who want to have a more structured college sports experience. Club sports are run as if they are an existing NCAA sports team and they offer options such as baseball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse, rugby, and many more. This is the ultimate competitive alternative for those high school and collegiate athletes who came here to play sports.

Club sports do require some extra fees that are dependent on the sport you chose, but these fees go towards travel, gear, and other essentials for you and your team. I came here specifically to play on the club lacrosse team so it is really important to me".
