Seawolves Clinch North Division Title With Win Over Coyotes

SSU Also Earns No. 1 Seed To Conference Tournament

Andrew Bailey scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got two goals from Andrew Bailey and a goal and assist from Brett Cook to beat Cal State San Bernardino 3-0 on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  The win, combined with a Cal State Stanislaus tie, clinches the CCAA North Division title and a berth in the CCAA Tournament for the Seawolves, now 12-5-0, 11-2-0 CCAA.

Sonoma State also clinched the No. 1 seed in the tournament, based on the fact that they beat Cal State L.A. earlier this year.  CSULA is the only team that has a mathematical chance to finish with as many points as the Seawolves already have (33).

Despite coming in as underdogs, the Coyotes (5-9-2, 4-7-2 CCAA) hung with the Seawolves in the first half.  They limited the Seawolves to just four shots entered halftime tied at zero.

SSU got the break they needed when the Coyotes committed a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick.  Brett Cook took the kick and buried it for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Seawolf lead.

The game stayed 1-0 until just over two minutes to play when Clark Rupp punted a ball to a streaking Eric Lafon.  Lafon quickly crossed it to Bailey who blasted it past the goalkeeper for a goal.

Not content with just one goal, Bailey picked up his second goal of the game, and 12th of the season, when he gathered a rebound off a Brett Cook shot and beat the goalkeeper again, with just 23 seconds remaining in the game.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, "We can play better.  Today we really had to grind it out."

Clark Rupp, sidelined with injuries for most of the last month, got his first start since September 17th and responded with his third shutout of the season.  "We're fortunate to have Clark back in the fold, but we didn't miss a beat with Brook Johnson in goal either," said Ziemer.

SSU outshot the Coyotes 12-8 for the game.  CSUSB had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks and led in fouls, 21-17.  They also committed three yellows card infractions and one red.

Sonoma State closes out their home schedule on Sunday against Cal Poly Pomona.  Prior to the game, there will be a short ceremony honoring the team's seniors.
