Thompson Scores Twice As Seawolves Beat Broncos

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Senior Emily Thompson had two goals to lead Sonoma State to a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Field.  With the win, the Seawolves inch closer to a berth in the CCAA Tournament, as they improve to 11-5-2, 9-3-2 CCAA.  The Broncos fall to 7-8-2, 5-7-2 CCAA.

The Seawolves have 29 points with two games left on the conference schedule.  An SSU win or a Humboldt State loss/tie next weekend will clinch a berth in the CCAA tournament for the Seawolves.  Humboldt State was a 1-0 winner over Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Cal Poly Pomona broke through right after the break.  Just 1:27 into the second half, Pamela Leyva found Mary Carroll, who booted it by Carissa Amiral.  On the next possession, in fact just 35 seconds later, Emily Thompson got the equalizer as she headed in a Katie Houle cross.

The score remained tied until the 80th minute when Thompson scored again.  Brittany Peterson sent the ball into the box where it was headed high into the air by Jessica Eshia.  Thompson had the next header and got it just over the outstretched arms of Bronco goalkeeper Nakisa Gutierrez.

Sonoma State held a commanding 16-6 advantage in shots.

Prior to the game, SSU's six seniors (Rita Herghelian, Courtney Oates, Megan Catton, Emily Thompson, Adriana Diaz, and Khyra Buchanan) were honored.

Sonoma State will close out the regular season next weekend at Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
