TURLOCK, Calif- The Sonoma State women's soccer team clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament on Friday with a 3-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. The Seawolves improve to 12-5-2, 10-3-2 CCAA with the victory. The CCAA Tournament starts on October 27th in La Jolla.
"I'm proud of this team," said head coach Luke Oberkirch, "we had to fight through a lot of injuries and adversity. I'm just happy for our student-athletes."
Sonoma State got on the board in the 13th minute when Megan Catton one-timed a shot from the left side of the box into the net. Lindsay Catton and Khyra Buchanan were awarded with assists on the play.
The Seawolves made it 2-0 just after the half when Tracy Webster scored on a breakaway. The Warriors (7-10-2, 4-9-2 CCAA) cut the lead in half on a Michelle Martinez goal in the 57th minute, but the Seawolves put the game away when Emily Thompson scored off a Megan Catton assist in the 71st.
It was the seventh goal of the year for Webster and Thompson.
The CCAA Tournament berth is the first for the SSU women's team since 2003. Pairings for the event won't be known until after Sunday's games.
Friday's win extends SSU's unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). They will close out the regular season on Sunday at Chico State. The Seawolves handed the Wildcats their only CCAA loss earlier in the season.
