LA JOLLA, Calif- Chico State's Katherine Bagwell netted the game-winner just 35 seconds into the second half as the Wildcats beat Sonoma State 1-0 in a CCAA semifinal game on Friday afternoon in La Jolla. The loss will end the Seawolves' season at 12-6-3. Chico, now 13-3-4, will advance to Sunday's championship game to play either Humboldt State or UC San Diego.
Chico's goal came in the first minute of the second half when Abby Stretch found Katherine Bagwell, who sailed a shot from seven yards past a diving Carissa Amiral.
The Seawolves' best chance came late in first half when a Rita Herghelian header glanced off the crossbar. Katie Houle had a shot at the rebound, but her kick was blocked by a Chico defender.
The Wildcats had a narrow 13-12 advantage in shots and each team took one corner kick. Chico was whistled for 14 fouls while SSU got nine called on them, all in the first half.
It was fitting the final score was 1-0 as this season's series between the Seawolves and Wildcats has been about as close as can be. The Seawolves edged Chico 1-0 in September before the team's played to a scoreless tie last Sunday.
The Seawolves finish the season with 12 wins, their most since 2002 when they went 12-6-1. Their 10 CCAA victories represent the most since a ten-win season in 1999.
Friday's loss also brought to a conclusion the careers of six four-year Seawolf seniors: Khyra Buchanan, Megan Catton, Adriana Diaz, Rita Herghelian, Courtney Oates, and Emily Thompson.
