Seawolves Tie School Record In 9-1 Rout Of Otters

David Seidel scored two goals on Friday afternoon

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State tied the school record with nine goals in a 9-1 romp over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  David Seidel and Andrew Bailey each scored two goals and five other Seawolves had goals as SSU goes to 11-4-0, 10-1-0 CCAA.  The Otters fall to 0-11-1, 0-10-1 CCAA.

The nine goals tied a record set in 1982 when Sonoma State beat the College of Notre Dame, 9-0.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, "It was great to get a chance to rest some of our guys.  The bench came up huge.  Guys got in the game and brought a lot of energy."

The win preserves SSU's three-game lead on the entire conference.  At 10-1-0, the Seawolves have earned 30 points.  Chico State and Cal State L.A. are next at 18 points (6-4-0) and both have games later on Friday.

Despite the final score, after one half of play it didn't look like a rout was in the works.  Sonoma State scored just twice in the first half, the first coming on a Mike Travis goal in the 26th minute.  Andrew Bailey made it 2-0 in the 40th minute on a breakaway.

At the half, head coach Marcus Ziemer commented on wanting to get the third goal.  He got that one....and then some.  Goal number three came just 23 seconds into the second half when Jaime Rivera crossed to Nathan Medina, who buried it into a nearly open net.

In the 51st, Brett Cook made it 4-0 when he headed in a rebound off a Stuart Gallant shot.  63 seconds later, Bailey got his second goal of the game, and team-high 10th of the season, off a Grant Robson assist.  Robson scored a goal of his own, his first in a Seawolf uniform, in the 64th minute off a Casey Dayton assist.

Cal State Monterey Bay netted their lone goal in the 64th minute when Andy Sturm fronted a free kick to Nick McGill, who headed it in.

The Seawolves were quick to answer, once again, as David Seidel picked up his first goal of the year on a penalty kick just 58 seconds later.  Goal number eight was scored by Ross Middlemiss in the 72nd minute and the capper was scored by David Seidel off a Mark Wiedeman assist in the 89th minute.

Sonoma State outshot the Otters 25-9 in the game and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Seawolves will try to keep rolling on Sunday when they host San Francisco State.
