POMONA, Calif- A late Sonoma State rally came up just short on Friday night as Cal Poly Pomona held on for a 77-71 win in men's basketball action in Pomona. Down ten with just over two minutes to go, the Seawolves quickly reeled off eight points to pull within two before the Broncos iced the game with free throws. The loss sends SSU to 0-3, 0-1 CCAA while CPP bumps up to 3-1, 2-0 CCAA.
Barry Weiss led the Seawolves with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting. It was the second straight game with 17 points for the Penngrove product, tying his career-high.
Jeremy Smith, a freshman from Chino Hills, finished with 16 points, nearly all of them in an impressive second half.
Andrew Kochevar was the third Seawolf in double figures, hitting four three-pointers on his way to 14 points. He also had a game-high eight rebounds.
Dion Cook led all scorers with 20 points in the game for the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona had a slight edge in shooting (.549 to .522) and outrebounded the Seawolves 27-22. SSU committed 13 turnovers to ten for CPP.
The Seawolves will seek their first win of the season tomorrow night when they take on Cal State San Bernardino.
