MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Sonoma State women's soccer team opened 2006 with a dominating 3-0 road win over Western Oregon Saturday.
Sonoma State (1-0) outshot Western Oregon 37-7 in the contest. Despite a 19-3 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves went into halftime with nothing to show. However, it didn't take long for SSU to break through and bury the Wolves (0-1) once the second half began. SSU scored three goals on 18 shots.
Senior Courtney Oates began the scoring at 51:17 with a header off an SSU corner kick. Six minutes later, Emily Thompson scored to put the Seawolves up 2-0.
Two freshman had impressive collegiate debuts for the Seawolves. Tracy Webster scored her first collegiate goal at 63:30 , SSU's third of the half, to conclude the SSU onslaught. Goalkeeper Vanessa Merced recorded her first collegiate win and shutout. Merced had two saves.
Sonoma State travels to Seattle, Wash. to take on Seattle University on Monday, Aug. 28 at 1:00 pm before returning to host Western Washington in opener of the Seawolf Classic Soccer Tournament over the Labor Day weekend.
