ARCATA, Calif- A Megan Catton penalty kick in overtime was the difference on Wednesday afternoon as Sonoma State beat Humboldt State 1-0 in CCAA women's soccer play. Catton converted the penalty kick with just under five minutes to go in overtime as the Seawolves improve to 4-3-0, 2-1-0 CCAA. The Lumberjacks drop to 4-3-0, 1-2-0 CCAA.
It was a defensive battle as SSU's goalkeeper,
Carissa Amiral and her HSU counterparts, Staci Self and Kelly Sandberg, kept offenses out of the net for 95 minutes. Amiral made six saves to earn the shutout in her first start of the season.
Sonoma State held a narrow 11-9 advantage in shots and the teams were deadlocked with five corner kicks apiece. SSU sophomore Katie Houle led all players with four shot attempts.
The Seawolves will play at San Francisco State on Friday as they continue their three-game Northern California road trip.
