SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Sonoma State improved to 4-0-0 in conference play with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over San Francisco State on Friday afternoon in San Francisco. Nathan Medina got the game winner on a breakaway with just under three minutes to go as the Seawolves improve to 5-3-0 overall. The Gators, despite a solid effort, fall to 2-5-0, 1-3-0 CCAA.
Sonoma State got on the board first in the 10th minute when Andrew Bailey scored off an assist by Brett Cook. The lead wouldn't last long as the Gators struck back right away on a Wes Whitt goal just 42 seconds later.
While it looked like a high-scoring affair might be in the works, both defenses settled down and the teams played another 97 minutes before another goal would be scored.
Just three minutes from a tie, Sonoma State ended the game when Andrew Bailey fed Nathan Medina on a breakaway, resulting in the game-winning goal.
SF State had several good opportunities in the second half, but could not capitalize. Part of that was due to the strong play of Seawolf goalkeeper Clark Rupp, who had a season-high eight saves in the game.
SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer remarked on the strong play of Bailey and Medina, stating, "We needed our big scorers to come through and that's just what they did." Both sophomores, Bailey scored 13 goals during his freshman season (2004) and Medina had 14 as a frosh (2005).
Continued Ziemer, "San Francisco State played a great game, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities."
The Seawolves held a narrow 22-20 advantage in shots, though just five of their attempts were on goal. SFSU, on the other hand, had nine of their 20 shots on goal. The Gators committed 18 fouls to just eight for SSU and all three offsides calls in the game were on SF State.
Sonoma State will conclude their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
