Seawolves Let Lead Slip Away Against No. 6 Chico

Danae Wellander had 14 points on Thursday night

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State let a nine-point halftime lead slip away on Thursday night in a heartbreaking 50-49 loss to No. 6 Chico State at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves were led by 15 points from Lauren Redfield, but it wasn't enough to keep them from falling to 6-9, 5-6 CCAA.  The Wildcats improve to 14-1, 10-1 CCAA.

Sonoma State led for most of the game, enjoying a lead as large as 12 in the first half before the Wildcats began their comeback.  Chico cut the lead to two at 40-38 with 13:00 left, but SSU was successful at keeping them from going ahead.  The teams slowed down play, going nearly four and a half minutes without a point being scored by either side.

Chico finally got the lead with 2:50 remaining when Audriana Spencer connected on her team's only three-pointer of the night.  The lead grew to four in th final ten seconds when Amber Simmons made a layup.  SSU had the ball at the end, but a three-pointer by Danae Wellander was only able to get them within one.

Simmons had a big night, finishing with 21 pointsand 13 rebounds.  Renee Goldoff also had ten rebounds for Chico State as the Wildcats held a healthy 45-34 advantage on the boards.  The advantage was even more noticeable on the offensive side where the 'Cats grabbed 21 offensive rebounds.

Redfield's 15 points came on 6-of-13 shooting.  Danae Wellander had 14 points and Heidi Mertle took game-high honors with nine rebounds.

The Seawolves will look to get back in the win column on Saturday night when they host Cal State Stanislaus.
