ROHNERT PARK, Calif- J.T. Tipton became Sonoma State's all-time leading rebounder on Thursday night as he helped lead the Seawolves to a 68-62 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in Rohnert Park. Tipton passed Creedence Perkins on the school's rebounding chart with his third rebound of the night, on his way to a nine rebound and 26 point performance. The victory is the first CCAA win of the year for SSU as they improve to 2-7, 1-4 CCAA. The Toros tumble to 5-4, 2-2 CCAA.
Tipton has now grabbed 774 rebounds in his career at Sonoma State.
In addition to the rebounding mark, Tipton also passed Erik Johnson to move into second place on the all-time scoring list. J.T. finished the night with 1,246 points leaving him 272 behind Perkins for the record. He'll need to average 16 points per game the rest of the way to catch him.
Sonoma State, in desperate need of a win, wasted little time surging to a 6-0 lead in the first minute of the game. They'd lead the entire way, growing their margin to as many as 15 in the first half. CSUDH could pull to within four at 53-49 with 4:25 to go, but Tipton drove the team to victory with 13 of the team's final 19 points.
The Watsonville native finished the night with 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a 10-of-11 tally from the free throw line. Andrew Kochevar joined him in double figures with 12 points.
Jonathan Toliver led a quartet of Toros in double figures with 15 points. Shamont Brown pitched in with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Sonoma State returns to action on Saturday night when they host UC San Diego.
