Tritons Shock Seawolves In Overtime Thriller

Chelsey Armacost had 18 to lead Sonoma State on Saturday night

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  UC San Diego's Meaghan Noud nailed a fade away three-pointer from nearly ten feet beyond the three-point line at the buzzer to send Saturday night's game at Sonoma State to overtime before the Tritons pulled out a 76-70 win in the extra period.  The win pushes UCSD's record to 8-2, 4-1 CCAA while the Seawolves see their tally drop to 3-7, 2-4 CCAA.

After the sixth tie of the back-and-forth game knotted it at 58 with one minute to go, Chelsey Armacost hit a pair of free throws to put SSU up two.  UCSD's Alexis Gaskin turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and the Tritons fouled to put Armacost on the line again with 19 ticks left.  The San Diego native hit her first, but missed the second leaving the score 61-58.

With nine seconds remaining, Noud missed a three-pointer, but the rebound was grabbed by teammate Michelle Osier.  With five seconds remaining  Osier turned it over to SSU's Lauren Redfield, but as soon as she had possession she was whistled for traveling to give it back to UCSD.  Buried deep in the mid court Noud received a pass from Kacie Kostlan and heaved the ball into the bottom of the net.

In overtime, Redfield drained a three on the Seawolves' first possession, but the Tritons would take control down the stretch, hitting their final two field goals and five consecutive free throws.

The nation's leading scorer, Leora Juster of UCSD, was corraled for most of the first half, but she finished with her average, 26 points, after a stellar second half.  She was joined in double figures by Noud with 16 and Hillary Hansen with 16.

Armacost paced SSU with 18 points.  Redfield had 15 and Danae Wellander poured in 14 in a supporting role.

The Seawolves return to action next Thursday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay.
