CHICO, Calif- Freshman
Jackie Blumenthal scored the game-winning goal as Sonoma State completed a season sweep of Chico State on Sunday with a 1-0 win in Chico. The win lifts the Seawolves to 7-6-2, 3-6-2 CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 9-5-1, 7-3-1 CCAA.
It was the end of an impressive weekend for the Seawolves against the CCAA North's front runners. SSU also tied Cal State Stanislaus, 0-0, on Friday.
Earlier in the season, the Seawolves beat the Wildcats by the same 1-0 score.
Head Coach Luke Oberkirch was ecstatic with his team's effort, "This is a real character builder. To go on the road and get four points against ranked teams is just a credit to our girls."
What's more, Sonoma State was down two starters after injuries over the weekend to
Laura Perry and
Halee Elmore.
Though SSU was out shot on Sunday, it was the one shot that made it into the net that made the difference. The Seawolves got that in the 28th minute when
Lindsay Catton fed
Jackie Blumenthal with a free kick. It was the fourth assist of the year for Catton, the team leader.
Goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti recorded her ninth shutout of the season, establishing a new freshman record. She is just three away from the school record of 12 shutouts.
Fourteen of Sonoma State's first fifteen games of the year have ended in a shutout. SSU has shut out seven of their opponents, they've been shut out five times and played in two scoreless ties.
SSU's stingy defense has allowed just five goals in their last eleven games, all in conference play.
The Seawolves return home next weekend to face Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
