PETALUMA, Calif- The Sonoma State women's soccer team busted out of an offensive slump on Friday with a 4-0 thumping of Cal State Monterey Bay at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma. The Seawolves improve to 8-6-2, 4-7-2 CCAA with the win while the Otters drop to 4-9-2, 1-9-1 CCAA.
The Seawolves had scored just three goals in their last seven games prior to Friday's onslaught.
Courtney Grixti and
Vanessa Merced combined to shut out the Otters, giving SSU nine shutouts in 13 conference games this season.
Senior
Tiffany Chappell led the charge on Friday with two goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. Her first goal came off a double assist from
Brittany Peterson and
Kayce Brawley. Chappell's second strike was set up by
Jaci Davey and
Jessica Eshia.
Up 2-0, the Seawolves added a couple of insurance goals late in the second half. The first came when
Tracy Webster blasted a ball from the left side off an assist from
Jackie Blumenthal. Webster's shot was heading into the goal, but it was given more momentum from an Otter defender who's deflection only made the ball hit the net with more force.
Davey made it 4-0 with a goal of her own in the 88th minute.
Brittany Finitz set her up with a brilliantly placed corner kick to the far side of the goal.
SSU out shot CSUMB 17-4 for the game and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Seawolves will host San Francisco State on Sunday for their final home conference game of the year. It will also be Senior Day.
